Bridge engineering questions

IRC 6 covers loads and stresses, IRC 112 covers concrete bridge design, IRC 78 covers foundations and substructures, and IRC 24 covers steel bridges. Railway bridges follow RDSO codes instead.

From span, ground conditions, clearance requirements, construction access and cost. Slab and girder forms suit shorter spans, box girders longer ones, and cable stayed or arch forms become relevant where span or navigational clearance demands them.

Scour usually governs. Foundation depth is set below the calculated scour level for the design flood, based on hydraulic study and geotechnical investigation, and underestimating scour is the most common cause of bridge foundation failure.
