Elevated station engineering questions

Structural design for concourse and platform levels, roof structures, MEPF, vertical transportation coordination, and the interface with the viaduct and the systems contractors.

The station structure usually straddles or supports the running structure, so their geometry, movement and load paths have to be resolved together. Expansion arrangements between station and viaduct are a critical detail.

Passenger flow. Entrance capacity, staircases, escalators and lifts are sized for peak arrival and departure surges, and the concourse must handle both directions plus fare gate queuing without conflict.

Escape routes must discharge to ground within the design evacuation time, which usually governs the number and position of staircases. Smoke control at platform level and access provision for firefighters both affect the structural layout.

Space. Elevated stations have limited plant room area, so services routing, plant location and coordination with the systems contractors need to be resolved early. Fitting equipment in late is often physically impossible.

By prefabricating where possible, planning crane positions and deliveries around traffic, and sequencing so road closures are short and predictable. Station sites are usually on busy junctions, which constrains everything.
