Hydro engineering questions

Civil and structural engineering for intake, waterway, powerhouse and tailrace structures, equipment foundations, and coordination across a project that is dominated by heavy civil work.

The civil works are the project. Unlike thermal plants where equipment dominates, hydro cost and programme are driven by tunnelling, dams, intakes and powerhouse excavation, all of which depend heavily on geology that is only partly known at the outset.

With investigation before commitment and design that can adapt. Rock quality determines excavation support, lining requirements and often the layout itself, so we design with contingency and expect the design to develop as the excavation exposes conditions.

Intake structures with trash handling and gates, headrace tunnels or channels, surge arrangements, penstocks and their anchors and supports, and the tailrace. Each has its own hydraulic and structural design requirements.

Whether surface or underground, the powerhouse carries generating equipment with dynamic loads, crane loads for erection and maintenance, and substantial hydraulic loads. Underground powerhouses add rock support and ventilation design.

Yes. Small hydro uses the same engineering principles at a scale where cost control matters more, so standardised structures and simplified civil works usually determine whether a scheme is viable.
